Written by: Julia Gordon Marketing & Social Awareness, Operations Support Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy The Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) has received a generous donation of $5,100 from three local Rotary Clubs to support its Books for Babies program. This contribution, made by the Williams Lake Daybreak Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Williams Lake, and the Rotary Club of 100 Mile House, will fund the program’s new book bags and books for the coming year, with plans for an additional donation to sustain the program into a second year.
Since 2001, the Books for Babies program has provided new parents in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region with resources to introduce their babies to reading from birth. Nurses at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital maternity ward deliver the first book bag to parents in the hospital, and a second bag is provided by health nurses during the child’s 18-month check-up. Each bag contains community information and four carefully selected books, helping parents nurture language development and a love of reading early on. Reading together strengthens parent-child bonds, offering babies the comfort of a familiar voice while introducing them to the rhythms and sounds of language. By hearing stories, children develop foundational language skills, even before they begin to speak. The Rotary Clubs’ support for the program aligns with their commitment to “service above self,” says Williams Lake Rotary Club President Amber Stratton. The clubs, which have a history of supporting community initiatives, chose to fund Books for Babies after hearing from Carla Bullinger, Co-Executive Director of CCPL. The three clubs decided to do a joint venture to support the program. Fundraising efforts in both communities enable the Rotary Clubs to contribute to local projects. In the Williams Lake community, fundraising events include the Stampede Breakfast and raffles, says Williams Lake Rotary Club President Amber Stratton. In 100 Mile House, fundraising events include rummage sales, an annual beer fest, and raffles , says 100 Mile House Rotary President Jim Carter. For those interested in joining or volunteering with the 100 Mile House Rotary Club, meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. Contact Jim at 604-970-0648 for more details. For those interested in joining or volunteering with the Rotary Clubs, meetings are held on Wednesdays at noon at CJ’s. Contact [email protected] for more information. Through this partnership, the Rotary Clubs and CCPL continue to strengthen the community by fostering literacy and supporting families.
